Obituary for Shirley A. FIlby

Shirley Anne Filby left this world on Sunday, August 13, 2017. Shirley is survived by her son, Johnnie “Kidd” Filby (Liz Santi), her sister, Darlene McWee (Dave Richmond), her nephew’s family, Scott (Kim), David and Dakota McWee, her cousin David Carl (Polly), and half-sister Katty Carls. She has also left behind numerous ‘children’ she helped raise over the years, like her unspoken favorites Megan and Mitchell, and also recently became a “Step Grandma” with the birth of Megan’s daughter. Her husband, George John Filby Sr., preceded her in death in 1998. They spent 34 years of love and life together. Shirley was a lifelong resident of Avella and Washington PA, where she had many friends and was quite the social butterfly. She and Darlene are part of the “Real McCoys’ being raised on the family farm by their Grandmother, Minyah and Great Aunt Mary. Shirley met George, and after she straightened him out, they married in November 12, 1964. Johnnie was born in 1965, and they lived on the dairy farm for a short period, where Shirley took care of her family, the farm, and babysat for numerous children over the years. She loved! At this time of year you could always find her at the Washington County Fair, where she competed for decades, with delicious pastries and goodies from her kitchen. Shirley was even published in many articles and cookbooks for her unbelievable pies. Folks would come from surrounding states to buy her coconut cream and lemon meringue pies. Shirley loved Christmas and no matter where she lived she would decorate the house and bring the spirit of Christmas alive for all who entered. She was a very intelligent and caring woman, who never made an enemy. She always found the good in people and that is what she focused on. Many people will sadly miss Shirley. She left a positive impact on everyone she met. She was an old and good soul, while on this earth, and no doubt is a welcomed addition to Heaven’s kitchen. The family will receive friends from 4pm until 7pm, the time of the memorial service, on Monday, August 21, in the Jerome A. Stefkovich Funeral Home, Inc., 18 Campbell St. Avella, PA 15312, with Rev. Sue Petritis officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Amedisys Hospice of Pennsylvania at 275 Meadowlands Blvd. Washington, PA 15301.
